Fishing
A short boat ride from Lubbers Quarter you will find bottom fishing on the reef
just off shore where you can catch snapper, grouper, and a variety of other reef
fish including those fun-to-catch barracuda. Lubbers is located at the center of
fishing activity with access to the ocean through Tilloo Cut. Trolling begins less
than a mile out the cut where the water
depth drops to over one thousand feet. Some tips for trolling include using rigged
ballyhoo with skirts of different colors, while some anglers like to mix in a large
diving plugs in the green and yellow colors. Small diving plugs of the same colors
trolled in shallow waters will catch you snapper, jacks, grouper and barracuda.
Bottom fishing with yellow jigs or sliding sinker rigs with cut bait will catch
you a variety of reef fish. Some of the best bone fishing in the world is on the
flats, a short distance from Lubbers.
Whether you decide to fish on your own or
use a local guide, there are several Deep Sea Charters available close to us.
In order not to miss out, you may wish to call & arrange your charter in advance of your visit as during busy times they are booked up when you arrive.

Bone Fishing
Bone fishing is done on the flats during the last of the ebb tide and the
first few hours of the incoming tide. Not only are the fish abundant but they are
also less wary of anglers and their lures, thanks, in part, to the lack of fishing
pressure.
In such a secluded area, there is no shortage of spots to fish and rarely
will you share a flat with another angler. Casting skimmer jigs and soft plastic
shrimp imitations work well on sand or grass. Pink is the best color for artificial
bait. The best natural bait is conch, crab or shrimp. Bone fishing is found in waters
year-around,
but the winter months seem to provide more fish. Lubbers Quarters bank on the west side of the cay is a good place to start.

Snorkeling/Diving
The third largest barrier reef in the world surrounds Abaco. World-class diving and snorkeling are minutes away from any of the cottages. Few places in the world offer a wider variety of diving/snorkeling opportunities, including wrecks and reefs.
The three best reefs for snorkeling & diving are Sandy Cay Reef, Fowl Cay Reef and Johnny's Cay. Sandy Cay Reef is in the Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park and has moorings for small boats. Fowl Cay is part of the Bahamian National Trust Preserve. There are numerous smaller destinations like Fish Hotel that are 5 minutes from any of the cottages and provide excitement for beginners as well as seasoned snorkelers.
The reefs offer many varieties of coral, including brilliant sea fans, balloon size brain, stag horn coral & sea coral. They are also home to fabulous marine life going about their normal life, including sea turtles, stingrays, nurse sharks, ells, fat Nassau groupers and the millions of colorful tropical fish will make you feel like you are in an aquarium. The warm Bahamian waters make it easy to snorkel & dive year-around and visibility is between 60 and 200 feet, depending on the season. Closer to shore are bright red and orange star fish.
